These state-of-the-art machines join the Company’s existing Powermill, which was purchased in 2017 and is one of the largest CNC machines in North America, solidifying the Company’s position as a leader in advanced manufacturing solutions for the aerospace, defense, automotive, energy, and shipbuilding industries.

The newly acquired machines boast significant size and capability, with axis travels of 315 x 157.5 x 59 inches (X/Y/Z). They also feature two interchangeable heads鈥攁 6,000-rpm universal head and a 12,000-rpm high-speed head鈥攁nd automatic head-changing capabilities. With these advanced features and controls, the machines deliver precision and efficiency and can handle the most complex large-scale machining tasks.

The C 650 U, chosen for its exceptional precision and versatility, is capable of handling complex 5-axis machining tasks with high accuracy. With a work envelope of about 41 x 35 x 24 inches (X/Y/Z), a Heidenhain TNC7 control, a tool spindle capable of operating at three rotational speeds (15,000 / 16,000 / 20,000 RPM), and a swiveling rotary table that can support up to 6,600 pounds, this machine is designed to tackle the most demanding machining tasks, including those involving superalloys such as Inconel庐 and titanium and other hard-to-machine materials.

The addition of the pallet changer enhances the system’s efficiency by automating the loading and unloading of workpieces, allowing for continuous, unattended operation. The pallet changer can handle up to 2,650 pounds per pallet, ensuring seamless integration with the machining center for high-volume production runs.

The Company鈥檚 decision to embrace automated machining was driven by increased production-level manufacturing of flight hardware, shipboard and nuclear components, and other high-precision, low-volume products for critical applications. These types of projects often require intricate 5-axis machining operations and extremely high precision, making the C 650 U an ideal choice.

The Benefits of an Industrial Spray Booth

Consistency and Accuracy

Garmat庐鈥檚 intricate filtration, temperature control, and airflow system ultimately make the painting process more repeatable and consistent. Removing debris from the outside air and maintaining a temperature-controlled environment will significantly increase consistency and accuracy.

Health and Safety

A benefit to both the employer, the employee, and governing bodies of the industrial sector is the safety the new booth provides to those who will be painting for long periods. As time has progressed, the regulations on these processes concerning employee safety have become much tighter in conjunction with emissions standards. The Garmat system allows any shop to comply with EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) standards as well.

Reduced Overhead, Increased Throughput

Traditional painting was previously limited by equipment and facility constraints, both of which will no longer be an obstacle with the addition of the Garmat booth.

Garmat’s Efficiency by Design

Garmat USA equipment is built to meet or exceed all applicable codes. NFPA (33, 86, 70, 91, and 101) Standards, National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants 6H (NESHAP subpart HHHHHH), OSHA standards (29CFR 1910.107), ETL, IFC, and IBC.

*Code compliance is dependent upon how the equipment is installed and used.

Garmat prides itself on its intricate airflow system, which does not collect any debris or particulates from the outside world, thus maintaining the paint booth free of contaminates and protecting quality and surface finishes. 鈥淥ur [booths] bring in 100% of [the] air from outside the building, keeping the spray temperature at the desired set point. [Additionally], the paint booth will recirculate the air in the bake cycle, which can reach up to 190 degrees Fahrenheit, accelerating the drying process and thus, increasing production while saving costs on the gas fuel needed by the 4M BTU burner. All Garmat booths have an energy conservation cycle, which puts air into recirculation in the spray mode when the painter is not using spray air,鈥 explains Ken Miklos, President of Spray Booth Products, the Garmat distributor for Baker鈥檚 new booth.

鈥淭he airflow system in their particular unit will help to exhaust all of the overspray, VOC, and smells as well as speed up the drying process [and] offer [several] filters that will keep any debris from getting into the painting stream.鈥 Additionally, the Garmat system offers a paint mix room to assist with cleaning the painters鈥 tools, ventilating out any harmful vapors, and maintaining the overall quality and health of employees.

Workflow Improvements

The most significant benefit to 糖心传媒 and its manufacturing offerings will be primarily from the throughput and workflow improvements seen with a new spray paint booth. 鈥淎 number of some of Baker鈥檚 larger aerospace jobs would take an average of three days to complete; that same set of components will now only take them a day to complete,鈥 says Miklos. 鈥淕armat prides itself on its relationship with distributors to be able to service all of their equipment, especially after the sale,鈥 explains Debbie Teter, Director of Sales and Marketing at Garmat USA.

In addition to better interior lighting and an intricate filtration system, Garmat鈥檚 industrial-grade equipment includes paint booth enclosures for automation packages, providing clean environments for those wanting to complete automated spraying at a production level. Ken Mikols, Garmat Distributor for the Detroit area, has taken advantage of the advanced engineering in Garmat paint booths for his automotive manufacturing customers. 鈥淔or some of the automotive companies we serve in the Greater Detroit area, we鈥檝e done [complete] automation projects for customers wanting to have an entirely automated system of spray,鈥 says Mikols.

The additional paint booth serves as a big step forward for 糖心传媒, expanding its overall capabilities and offerings to aerospace, automotive, space, and defense customers. In addition to its robust CNC machine shop floor and additive manufacturing facilities, the ability to paint components on the fly will allow Baker to cover the entire scope of a project, from a block of raw material to the complete, assembled, and finished part shipped to the customer.

The new paint booth is currently in production, and Baker hopes to have it operational by the end of the year.

CNC Milling Capabilities

While the ProtoTRAK is by no means a high-volume, production-oriented machine, it is just as useful as a CNC machine for high mix/low-volume applications for both milling and turning. The secret sauce for this piece of capital equipment comes from the patented ProtoTRAK CNC control which offers a variety of ways to set up and program your machining operations. Some will choose to write simple, geometry-based programs at the control with simple prompts and commands. Others may take their CAD/CAM files and import them directly into the machine. For basic operations, the machinist can choose to run the machine manually by turning the X and Y handwheels.

ProtoTRAKs are commonly used by tool and die machinists and have been a trusted means of creating tooling for over 40 years. Prototyping, jigs, fixtures, low-volume production, and R & D can all be accomplished on these toolroom-style milling and turning machines. Aside from traditional milling and turning machines, the ProtoTRAK line also extends into the low-to-mid-volume machining market with some of its rigid and versatile machining centers for various 3-axis milling operations.

Open-Style Machine

The DPM model milling machine is ideal for machine shops that work with parts of a variety of sizes and has a wide working envelope to accommodate both small and large components. Brushless servo motors and precision ground ball screws allow this 50 x 12 in. table with a Turcite coating to traverse at up to 400 IPM on the X and Y axes either with the touch of a button or a turn of the machine鈥檚 electronic handwheels.

Machining Versatility

Program on the Fly

Programming a CNC Milling Machine is no easy task, but the ProtoTRAK takes the headache and guesswork out of this tedious process. For the most part, if you understand GD&T, blueprint reading, feeds, and speeds, you can run a ProtoTRAK. Simply setting a 0,0 point, telling the control where to move, and how fast to run the spindle, you can write simple programs at the control that are automatically converted to CAM files (G-Code) to have you up and running machining operations in just a few minutes.

Insert CAD Files

For most machine shops, the traditional means of programming involves taking a CAD model and feeding it into a programming software such as MasterCAM, which will generate a G-Code file. The ProtoTRAK control can receive such files, which can quickly be implemented into the control鈥檚 GUI and run with just a few simple setups needed.

Capable of Manual Machining

While this is a CNC machine tool, the ProtoTRAK offers the best of both worlds with its manual machining capabilities. This proves itself useful for the machinist who is trying to quickly set tool offsets, Z-heights, 0,0 datum points, and other operations that are tough to do with traditional production-style CNC machines. Skilled manual machinists might want to do simple operations by hand, eliminating the need to do any programming, and get straight to making chips on their machine.

CNC Cutting Simulation

For CNC programmers who want to see their parts run before hitting the 鈥渞un鈥 button, watching a computer simulation is a great means to verifying that your job will run smoothly. VeriCut offers a powerful, realistic video simulation for the machinist after all initial geometry and tool setups have been created.

TRAKing

A feature only available on ProtoTRAKs, the TRAKing feature is the sure-fire way of making sure your job will run smoothly. After programming the control and setting up your 0,0 point and tool offsets, TRAKing will allow the machine operator to 鈥淭RAK鈥 through the initial run of that first run by use of the handwheels. By simply turning the electronic handwheels, the operator has complete control of the machine, able to run it forward and backward to make sure it clears the vise, clamps, or other work holding pieces.

Power Drawbar

While this machine is not equipped with a tool-changer, it offers a power drawbar to quickly change out the CAT40-style tooling. With the push of a button, the pneumatic drawbar quickly screws and unscrews the tooling in the machine for tool changes in under 30 seconds. An optional CAT40 tool cart will allow the operator to store up to 8 tools on the cart, which can be stationed right next to the milling machine for even quicker changeovers. Although the head remains in a fixed position, the machine operator can use a manual quill on this machine for setting tool offsets, performing manual drilling operations, and more.

Capable of 4- and 5-axis Machining

For added complexity, the ProtoTRAK Bed Mills allow a third-party rotary table to be hooked into the machine to an added 鈥淎-Axis鈥 to extend from its initial 3-axis machining capabilities. Setup for this workholding device is fairly straightforward and prompts within the ProtoTRAK programming language allow the machinist to prompt when to rotate the rotary table and by how much. This is a great add-on feature for shops that routinely face sophisticated geometries requiring more handling of the part than a Kurt Vise can handle.

This acquisition is the next step in Baker鈥檚 planned approach to expanding its capacity in servicing OEM and Tier 1 customers’ largest machining projects with the same level of experience, quality, and precision that customers have come to expect from Baker.

Virtually No Limits

With 38 versatile CNC machines on the roster already, the Powermill was primarily purchased for the machining of large-scale assembly tools, bond tools, and other colossal components. The open structure of the machine’s moving gantry allows for more convenient loading and handling of these very large tools. The spacious 52 x 20 x 10 ft. envelope is large enough to fit seven full-size SUVs or two semi-truck trailers on its platform. This unique design enables Baker to process parts up to a maximum weight of 2.6 million pounds on the stationary table. In other words, the Powermill is only limited by the size of the job.

Power and Major Versatility

The new five-axis machine will come equipped with several automatically changing heads that allow for universal direction machining. In addition to the sizable 14-meter (46 feet) X-axis travel, the Powermill offers travel of 6 meters (20 feet) in the Y-axis and 2.5 meters (8 feet) of travel in the Z-axis. In order to maximize productivity, the new Powermill speeds around the work area with rapid travel and feed rates of 30m/min.

Aside from the flexibility, capacity, and high-speed functionality, the new Powermill delivers an unprecedented level of rigidity and machining performance, which is ideal for the heavy-duty cutting of invar, steel, aluminum, cast iron, composites, and other alloys that are generally difficult to machine on a large scale. The heavy-duty machining potential of the new Powermill is exemplified by the unique bifurcated cross rail with ram and saddle riding and guiding inside the cross rail. This is complemented by a 6,000 rpm (42 kW) main spindle motor with a torque output of 1200 Nm, which retains exceptional power output throughout the complete speed range.

Working in synergy with the spindle motor is a CAT50, HSK63, and HSK100 spindle taper that accommodates large cutting tools. The spindle nose is supplied with tools via an automatic tool-changing system that gives 糖心传媒 the capacity to process a complete variety of jobs with minimum set-up time.

From Rough to Finish Machining

The Powermill is capable of taking each job from rough to finish, all on one machine. For the machining of large components and tools up to and beyond 16 meters, this will provide paramount precision, repeatability, and overall lead times.

Building a Strong Foundation

To prepare for a machine of this size and stature, Baker began construction on the site last June. The company removed approximately 436,000 pounds of 10-inch thick concrete in 4鈥 x 4鈥 sections. The total excavation of the 45 x 75 x 7 ft. pit, including concrete and 450 yards of clay, weighed close to 1.2 million pounds.

Once the contents of the pit were removed, roughly 1.94 million pounds of crushed stone and concrete were poured into the pit, spread, and tamped down. All concrete was poured within the same day to eliminate any seams in the foundation; nearly 60,000 pounds of steel reinforcement framework was also added to support the structure.

This isn鈥檛 the first major investment Baker has made in recent years鈥攊n early 2017, they acquired a Mecof EcoMill machine, two new cranes for their fabrication facility, and have recently broken ground to support the massive Mecof PowerMill that will become operational in November of this year.

The move to acquire another highly specialized machine with this functionality came three years after purchasing their first Toshiba Boring Mill and stems from Baker鈥檚 initiative to become a more versatile and diverse supplier. This second Toshiba mill will enable Baker to handle its customer鈥檚 biggest challenges from start to finish while reducing lead time. It will enable Baker to prepare more jobs for conventional machining and free up capacity on several of their other CNC machines. It will also help to support the growth of Baker鈥檚 customers.

The 4-axis Toshiba Boring Mill is the embodiment of strength and accuracy. It was designed for better cutting performance and is ideal for drilling large-diameter bores, weldments, rapid stock removal, and intricate machining that requires high accuracy. It features a 130 mm spindle diameter for heavy-duty cutting capabilities. This machine will provide the most torque of all Baker鈥檚 38 CNC machines.

High-speed precision machining is achieved by using a new B-axis rotary table drive mechanism. This revolutionary clamp type is standard with a highly rigid double pinion-type drive system and rotary scale for stabilized precision table indexing. This machine is also designed for the minimal thermal displacement of the spindle head. The machine鈥檚 large, extending quill is ideal for deep jobs.

With increased customer demands comes a need to become more efficient. In addition to the robust power and accuracy, the new mill features a 71鈥 x 87鈥 rotary table that can bear up to 44,000 lbs., with a spacious x-axis travel of 118鈥 and 90鈥 in the Y-axis and Z-axis. The size of this rotary table and the ability to manipulate angled machining with great ease and efficiency will enable Baker to reduce the number of setups and secondary processes.

The boring mill also features a CAT50 spindle taper accommodating large cutting tools. The spindle nose is supplied with tools via a 38-tool automatic tool-changing system that gives Baker the capacity to process a complete variety of jobs with minimum set-up time.

The mill is a robust package that includes the TOSNUC 999 operating system, which is the latest version of Toshiba鈥檚 integrated control. Manual operations relating to machine movements are separate from the NC operation unit and centrally arranged on the pendant operation box, enabling manual machining operations to be performed smoothly. This package also includes a comprehensive look ahead feature for smooth and accurate 3D cutting.

Baker鈥檚 new investment became operational on June 1st. Primarily purchased for the production of large-scale frames, layup tools, and general tooling components for customers in the aerospace and automotive sectors, the new 5-axis MECOF was installed and commissioned in December 2016. The new horizontal milling machine is the epitome of flexibility with its ability to work in both the horizontal and vertical axes with its 3+2 axis configuration that combines with a rotary table that takes the new acquisition to a 7-axis variant that allows 糖心传媒 to flexibly machine five sides of the workpiece in a single set-up.

The ability of the new EcoMill to conduct 5-sided machining in a single set-up will reduce the number of set-ups and secondary processes on alternate machines. For the machining of large components and tools up to 10 meters, this will significantly reduce the need for repeatedly moving parts with cranes for machining faces that cannot be processed with existing machine tools. Furthermore, the ability to complete parts in a single set-up will improve the repeatability, consistency, and overall precision of machined components. This precision is emphasized by the linear positional accuracy of P= 15+3.(L-1000)/1000碌m), which equates to an ultra-precise total error of 42 microns over the complete 10-meter length of the X-axis.

In addition to the 10-meter X-axis, the EcoMill offers travel of 1300 mm on the Y-axis and 2.5 m on the Z-axis. To maximize productivity, the new EcoMill speeds around the work area with rapid travel and feed rates of 30 m/min.

Aside from the flexibility and capacity, the new EcoMill delivers an unforgiving level of rigidity and machining performance, which is ideal for the heavy-duty cutting of cast iron, steel, and aerospace-grade alloys that are particularly difficult to machine on a large scale. The heavy-duty machining potential of the new EcoMill is exemplified by the symmetrical column structure that achieves a high level of stiffness and the horizontal ram and column box-in-box design. This is complemented by a 6,000rpm 38kW spindle motor with a torque output of 600Nm that retains exceptional power output throughout the complete speed range.

Working in synergy with the spindle motor is a CAT50 spindle taper that accommodates large cutting tools. The spindle nose is supplied with tools via a 40-tool automatic tool-changing system that gives 糖心传媒 the capacity to process a complete variety of jobs with minimal set-up time.
